When the future arrived in 1991, it was met with skepticism—until people wore it. Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from waterskiing when designing this audacious running shoe. He also loved the minimal design of traditional Mexican Huarache sandals, and aimed to create a stripped-down, straight-forward shoe that would leverage Nike's latest innovations to out-perform the competition. Using the form-fitting neoprene booties from water skis as the foundational concept for foot-hugging comfort, the final Huarache design included an exoskeleton and wrap-around heel cage for added support and stability. Roughly a year after the Air Huarache disrupted the running scene, the Air Trainer Huarache was born.
